Requirements: Instructor candidates must be 18 years of age and
older to receive a certificate (16 years or older for Assistant
candidates). All participants must be experienced horsepersons who are
able to catch, lead, groom, saddle, and ground handle a horse without
assistance. They must be able to mount, ride with reasonably good form
and control at the walk, trot, canter or lope on both leads in the ring
and in the open. Prior teaching experience is extremely helpful.
Certification will be based on performance related to safety management,
horsemanship, teaching skills, group control, and professionalism. The
focus will be on the candidate’s ability to work effectively with people
and horses at various levels. Certification and the level of
certification are determined by two Clinic Instructors who will
individually evaluate each candidate. The candidate’s personal
horsemanship abilities must be at least one level higher than the level
certification received. There is a written exam and lecture/discussion
sessions.
Certification is viable for three years from the certification date.
In order to maintain certification, yearly membership must be
maintained. To renew certification, a minimum number of requirements
must be met within the three year period.
Emphasis of this clinic: Both Western and English styles will be
offered. Candidates can seek either or both disciplines. The primary
texts will be CHA Composite Manual, CHA Standards and CHA Instructors
Manual. These books will be provided to you prior to the clinic, after
receipt of your registration and deposit. It is important that you
prepare ahead of time since there will be little time to study at the
clinic. Be prepared for inconsistent weather, long busy days, and hours
in the arena and barn chores. Trail Level 1 or 2 explained by request.
